(photo with article) GEDDIE, F.R.--Funeral services for Floyd Ray Geddie, 72, Ben Wheeler, were held at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 25 in the Hilliard Funeral Home Chapel, Van, with Jay K. Jackson officiating. Burial was in the Colfax Cemetery. Mr. Geddie died February 22, 1996, in a Tyler hospital. He was born October 7, 1923, in Van Zandt County to the late Tommie D. and Pearl "Pearly" Ann Hale Geddie, and lived in Ben Wheeler for 13 years, moving from Victoria. He was a retired accountant for the DuPont Company with 32 years of service, and was a member of the Colfax United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Stroud Geddie, in 1991. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Lawrence Ray and Beatrice Anderson Geddie, Statesboro, Georgia, and Don and Katheryn Geddie, Ghent, New York; daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Anthony Smith, Czech Republic; three brothers, Noble Geddie, Billy Dean Geddie and T.D. Geddie, all of Ben Wheeler,TX; two sisters, Marlene Bird, Columbus, Ohio, and Rachel Clowers, Cisco; and four grandchildren (Deanna Elaine Geddie; Hannah Lee Geddie; Laura Christine Geddie; Bryan Ray Geddie). Geddie of Ben Wheeler celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday with a reception at the home of Bill and Sandra Geddie hosted by their children. Mr Geddie married the former Lucille Matthews on Dec. 25, 1943. He retired from furniture refinishing in 1980. She is a homemaker and also makes dolls for the Salvation Army. Their children are Mike and Sherrie Geddie of Canton, Phyllis Ann Geddie of San Antonio and Tom Geddie of Dallas. VAN ZANDT NEWS, Nov. 30, 1997: GEDDIE MAKES BEAUTIFUL MUSIC AND INSTRUMENTS (photo with article) T.D. Geddie, who lives near Van, plays one of the double neck tenor guitars he made. Mr. Geddie also handmade all of the fiddles he is shown with, including the first one he ever made back in 1958 on the left. All of the instruments, except the 1958 fiddle are for sale. Article by Paul Maca VAN-----Many people can play more than one instrument, but what is rare is the person that can make an instrument and play it. Even more rare is a person who can make moe than one instrument by hand. T.D. Geddie of Van is one of those rare people who can play many instruments and can also hand make them. Even while he was in high school in Van back in the 30's, Mr. Geddie was playing guitar and enjoyed other instruments, but it was in 1956 that he made his first instrument by hand. A fiddle was the first instrument I made and even though it wasn't perfect, it turned out very well. "I like a deep tone on a fiddle. Not a shrill sound," Mr. Geddie said. "I've still got a little more experimenting to do." That first fiddle did sell but Mr. Geddie didn't have time to make anymore instruments for a while because his music career was going strong at the time. Along the way, he's met Buck Owens, Conway Twitty and others. While playing in or leading various bands, Mr. Geddie eventually started making musical instruments again--this time a double necked tenor guitar. "It's not as tedious as a fiddle," Mr. Geddie said, adding that he's used the guitar on stage before. After the double necked guitar, he decided to make some more fiddles including an electric fiddle that he used in his performances. According to Mr. Geddie, the process to make a fiddle takes around two to three months and is very detailed. The wood, European Spruce, must be air dried for eight to ten years and then can be used. The specifications to make a fiddle can be changed by a small portion and the sound of the fiddle will come out very different. The result has been some very good sounding and very attractive fiddles that Mr.Geddie now has for sale. For those who would like to hear the sound of the fiddle, just go to the Martins Mill grocery store on any Friday night of the year where area musicians gather together to eat, drink, talk, and play their music. "I've missed one Friday night in the last ten years," Mr. Geddie said. So while many people like the sound of the guitar, piano or drums, Mr.Geddie said, "I've always loved a fiddle." ****************************************************************************

Notes for James Alexander Geddie: This couple is buried in a private cemetery near the former community of Owlet Green (near Van), Van Zandt County, Texas. This couple along with their children, and with Mary Margaret's two brothers, Thomas and Archibald McPhail, together with their families, left North Carolina on March 22, 1850, going to Georgia and staying briefly with the Maxwells, leaving Georgia in December, 1850, heading west to Alabama, where they visited Geddies who had gone there before them. They stopped in Mississippi for a year to make a crop and then on to Texas in covered wagons, ox-carts. They stopped first in Cherokee County, Texas, where they paused long enough to size up the potential farming lands, and then ultimately to Van Zandt County, in which county they bought land a stone's throw from Owlet Green. From Our Heritage, November 1991, Van Zandt County, Texas, page 134: Wills Point Chronicle, 11 June 1908 (submitted by Elvis Allen) DEATH OF A PIONEER: D. Mc. N. McPhail passed away at his late home near Colfax last Friday. In County over fifty years. Enjoyed an extended acquaintance throughout this section and had the confidence of all. Colfax, Texas, June 8...After a lingering illness for the long period of four years, occasioned by paralysis, "Uncle" Daniel McPhail died at his home near this place at 9:30 o'clock last Thursday night, the 4th ins., and was laid to rest in the Colfax cemetery Friday afternoon. Funeral services, at the Presbyterian Church, were conducted by Rev. Will Johns, assisted by Revs. Wm. Dawson and Pink White. Deceased was a well known and highly esteemed pioneer citizen of this community. Having resided here for over fifty years, he enjoyed an extended acquaintance thought this county; was a man whose high standard of ;morals, piety and entegrity had won for him the love and confidence of all who knew him, which was attested by the very large attendance of friends who had come from far and near to pay their last tribute of respect at his grave. He leaves a wife and a number of grown children, all of whom attended his bedside in his last illness and rendered every service possible for the alleviation of his suffering, and to whom the sympathy of the community is extended in this hour of affliction.
Biographical: Daniel Mc. N. McPhail was born Jan. 9, 1826 in Cumberland County, N. C. He was married to Isabella Geddie, Nov. 19, 1851, and died at 9:30 p.m. June 4, 1908. He professed faith in Christ and joined the Bluff Presbyterian church located in Cumberland County, N.C, about 64 years ago. Mr. McPhail started to Texas in the fall of 1850 and married the following November in Jackson, Mississippi, in which state he lived two years. From there he and his wife moved to Cherokee County, Texas in the early part of 1853, and lived there one year. He moved from there to his late home near Colfax, this county, in January 1854. He was the father of 11 children, six of whom are living. Thus closes the career of one who was indeed a pioneer citizen of Texas and Van Zandt County, a man whose Godly life, whose upright dealings with his fellow man and patriotic devotion to his family, his friends and his government is an example worthy of emulation by all who would seek to get the best and noblest out of his life. The editor of the Chronicle has known Mr. McPhail for many years and has often wondered at the fortitude, the energy, and the patience, and the privations which he and his wife, together with the other early settlers of this country must have suffered while blazing out the path-way to civilization which the present generation enjoys, and the editor has also always had for Mr. McPhail and wife the utmost veneration and the hightest respect for the example of the good citizen which their lives from exemplified. Our Heritage, Van Zandt County, Texas, November 1991, page 133: from the book Family Land Registry: The McNeill Ranch is located one and one-half miles east of Colfax. It was founded in 1859 by Daniel McNeill McPhail who had come from North Carolina in a wagon train in 1853. Original acreage was 160 which McPhail raised cattle and goats as well as ribbon cane and corn. McPhail married Isabella Geddie and to this union was born six* children: Sam, Shad, Lem, Jock,Sis and Lula. Lula and her husband, R.L. McNeill owned the land next and it is their son, Daniel Shad McNeill who is the present owner. McPhail and McNeill both acted as medical advisors for the community. Lula and R.L. McNeill had, in addition to Shad, five other children: O.A., Sabrah, J.C., Sarah Clota and Sam L.(according to Family Land Heritage Registry, Vol. 2, 1975, Daniel M.N. McPhail obtained his land grant of 160 acres in 9-19-1859.) ii. Geddie, the applicant named above desires to take the depositions of T,A. Geddie and H.N. McPhail, resident citizens of Van Zandt County, Texas, in answer to the following interrogatories propounded to them by the said Applicant, the answers of the said witnesses to be used as evidence on behalf of the Applicant in the matter of his application for Confederate Pension. Direct Interrogatories to T.A Geddie and H.N. McPhail 1st. Intg. Please state your names, ages and place of residence? Also state the number of years each of you have resided in Texas. Are you acquainted with J.A. Geddie, and if yea, how long have you known him? 2nd. Intg. On the 4th day of August 1899, J.A. Geddie made application for Confederate Pension under the Act passed by the 26th legislature of the State of Texas, and approved May 12, 1899, and in said application said Geddie stated that he was a member of Company I, Hubbards Regiment, 22nd Infantry, and that he enlisted under Captain Sharp, and also under Captatin Wood, after the resignation of Captain Sharp. He also stated, in the said application, that he served the Confederacy 3 years and 2 months. Now please state fully what you may know concerning the enlistment and service of the said J.A. Geddie, in the Confederate Army; and in this connection, please give the date of his enlistment, the name of his Captain, the Company and regiment he was in and the length of time he served. Geddie to direct and cross interrogatories? To the 1st Intg. They answer: "We live in Van Zandt County, Colfax P,O. We have lived in Texas continuously since 1853. We have know J.A. Geddie since were small children and all our lives. H.N. McPhail is 64 yrs. old and T.A. Geddie is 53 years old." To the 2nd Intg. They answer: "We both know that J.A. Geddie enlisted in Co. "I" 22nd Tex. Infantry. This co. was commanded first by Capt. Sharp and later by Capt. White Wood. He served something about three years don't remember the exact time. He came home after the close of the war. We know this of our own personal knowledge because we served in the same Co. and regiment. The regiment was commanded by R.B. (Dick) Hubbard." "He served under the name of James Allen Geddie. He enlisted fom Van Zandt County, Texas. The company was made up at Tyler from Smith, Van Zandt & Henderson Counties and we know of our own knowledge the facts to which we testified. The Orderly Seargent, J.J. Notes for John "Big John" Geddie: He was called "Big John" because of his weight and size. He weighed 350 pounds and considered himself an outstanding wrestler. When Big John was in is prime, he pulled any man in the whole country under the handspike, that is, rollling logs. He three a 200 pound colored man against the fence and broke his thigh in a wrestling match. He died when he was 59 years old from fatty degeneration of the heart.

Notes for Robert Alexander Geddie: (from Geddie McPhail Book by Jack Geddie) Soon after he married his first cousin, Christian Geddie, they went to Alabama and settled down. A neighbor was caught stealing something, perhaps some hogs, from Robert Alexander Geddie, and the latter call him a thief and took him to court. The judge would not allow Robert Alexander Geddie to present the facts of the matter in court, and the thief in turn sued him for libel. Robert Alexander could not introduce the evidence in this trial that the man had stolen from him, so lost the libel case. He swore he would not live in any state in which truth could anot be part of court suit, and moved on to Louisiana, where on Dec 5, 1882, he had lived in Morehouse Parish, Elton Postoffice, for more than 30 years. He died there at the age of some 88 years. One day over in Arkansas, where he owned some land, he was riding through some piney woods when the wind rose to hurricane proportions. The timber was falling all around him, thick and fast. He couldn't go forward, and he couldn't go backward. He decided that if he had ever prayed then this was the time to do it. He got from his horse, hown on his knees and prayed. He was conscious of the terrible noise of the storm around him for a while, and then he began to shout. When he had finished his shouting, the storm was over, and practically every tree around him had been blown down, and none had hit him, even though they were inches from him. He joined the Methodist Church shortly thereafter and was a religious man for the rest of his life. iv. Notes for Dougald McPhail: (from Geddie\McPhail Genealogy by Jack Geddie, page 209) Dougald McPhail was born in Scotland and came to the United States around 1772 on a boat containing his sister, Isabella, his brother Daniel; James Daniel Geddie and possibly two of his brothers; and the remainder of the boat load were Maxwells. They settled somewhere in the valley of the Cape Fear River, around Fayetteville, probably some miles east or south of Fayetteville, North Carolina. His brother Daniel McPhail accepted land from the King of England in form of patents, and at the time of the revolutionary war swore that he would not fight a man who gave him land. During the period, a man representing himself as a tax collector of the crown confronted Daniel one day and forced him into a fight. Daniel was forced to kill him. After that Daniel McPhail disappeared, some say to Canada, some say to Alabama. Actually no one ever heard of him again.
The family McPhail is referred to by some writers as a sept of the Clan Cameron. Some writers refer to them as a sept of the Clan Chattan. Dr. George Fraser Black, in the Surnames of Scotland writes: "The Book of Mackay claims that a section of McPhails were the sons of Paul, son of Neil MacNeil Mackay, brother to Angue Dubb of 1411. The Seil-Phaill of Sir Robert Gordon appears to have been Mackays decended from Paul. A list of tenants of the Reay estates about 1678 shows a number of MacPhails." So, the name of McPhail really means the son of Paul.
From Colfax by Jack Geddie, page 108-109: McPhail Two McPhail brothers and their sister were among the original settlers of the Colfax-Owlet Green area. The oldest was Thomas McPhail, who settled just south of Colfax, Archibald McPhail, who obtained a grant of land in Owlet Green near to that of James A. Geddie, the husband of his sister, Mary Margaret McPhail. The McPhail Clan begins early in the history of Scotland. The name of the ancestors of the McPhails was Cattanach, and this Cattanach Clan was one of the original septs of the Clan Chattan, a powerful Highlands Clan that made itself known throughout the history of Scotland. The name means "Son of Paul". The first of the Clan was Paul Gow, and his son was called McPhail. His grandson was Sir Andrew McPhail of Invenness, Scotland, one of the first officials of the Presbyterian Church in Scotland, shortly after the Protestant Revolution. The McPhails wrote their name into the Ecclesiastical History of Scotland, and into church and literary history of Australia, Canada, the United States, and other places over the world to which they, along with other Scotsmen, migrated. By the time the McPhails decided to come to Texas from North Carolina in 1850, most of their children were practically grown.

From Histories and Biographies of Van Zandt County, Texas article F403, written by Martin G. White: The earliest McPhails in Van Zandt County were two brothers, Thomas McPhail (b. Apr 1, 1795 in NC and Archibald (b. May 31, 1811 in NC), the sons of Dougald and Isabella Murphy McPhail. They arrived in Van Zandt County around 1850, along with their sister Mary Margaret, who was married to James Alexander Geddie. Thomas McPhail settled in the Colfax Community and Archibald McPhail settled in the Owlet Green Community, near Van, as did Mary Margaret McPhail Geddie and her husband. Etc. iv. Daniel McPhail, born 1797 66; died 1880 66; married Margaret Christian Baker 18 December 1822 in Cumberland County, North Carolina67. Notes for Daniel McPhail: There is one single stone and did not seem to indicate that Christian was buried there too, just that she was his wife.

Notes for James Daniel Geddie: (from Geddie-McPhail Geneology by Jack Geddie) The first Geddie in the U.S. was James Daniel Geddie, who married Isabella McPhail, both of whom came from Scotland around 1772. James Daniel may have had two brothers, and if he did have, they were John Geddie and Thomas Geddie. (for more inf. on these two refer to book). James Daniel Geddie fought in the North Carolina Militia during the revolutionary war. He is listed in Soldiers of North Carolina in the American Revolution compiled by the North Carolina chapter of the Daughters of the American Republic. Testimony to this fact lies today in the vouchers in Box B-1, The Comptroller's Office, North Carolina Archives, Voucher No. 1587 lists James Daniel Geddie and indicates he was paid for his services. James Daniel had several sons and some daughters. The daughters names have been lost in matrimony, except one who married Alexander McAllister and Elizabeth who married Alexander McKeithan. Notes for Thomas Geddie: The trade of cooper was very prevalent in this branch of the Geddie family headed up by Tom Geddie. Tom must have known something about the cooper trade. He apprenticed his son, James Alexander Geddie to Thomas McPhail, a cooper, when James Alex was 12 years old, to learn the cooper trade. Then Tom took off for Alabama. In those days, around 1824, every boy was taught a trade of some sort, especially among the Scots. A cooper was a barrel maker. Barrels were made by hand to hold cider, vinegar, tar, turpentine, and in some cases whiskey in those early days of the Cape Fear district in North Carolina.

It is part of the legend of the Geddie family, handed down through generations, and to the writer of Geddie and McPhail Genealogy, Jack Geddie by Henry Clay Geddie that the wife of Tom Geddie, Marron MadDougall, born in a Scots colony in Cuba around 1790, was descended from Robert Bruce, the onetime King of Scotland.
