REV.
MOSES BALLOU
1811-1879

THE DIVINE CHARACTER VINDICATED - Moses Ballou - First Printing, 1854

REV. MOSES BALLOU was a son of David Ballou and began preaching Universalism in 1833, itinerating in the area around his home in Monroe, Massachusetts. He was considered a powerful preacher. After receiving fellowship in 1834, he settled in Bath, New Hampshire, 1835; Portsmouth, New Hampshire, 1836-43; New York City (Fourth Universalist), 1843-45; Portsmouth again, 1845-48; Bridgeport, Connecticut, 1848-54; Hartford, Connecticut, 1854-57; Philadelphia (Second Universalist), 1857-59; New York City (Third Universalist), 1859-65; New Haven, Connecticut (supply preaching), 1865-66; and Philadelphia (Second Universalist again), 1866-72. In retirement in Atco, New Jersey, he preached to a small society that he had helped to found. In addition to writing for the Universalist Quarterly and other denominational papers, he wrote THE DIVINE CHARACTER VINDICATED (1854), a book personally subsidized  by Phineas T. Barnum, to whom he dedicated the book, which is a thorough review as well as commentary on the recent THE CONFLICT OF AGES by Reverend Dr. E. Beecher.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

THE DIVINE CHARACTER VINDICATED: A review of some of the principal features of Rev. Dr. E. Beecher's recent work, entitled The Conflict of Ages, or The Great Debate on the Moral Relations of God and Man. Author: Rev. Moses Ballou. New York: J. S. Redfield, 1854. This is a subsidized first printing of most probably 50 copies to no more than 250. The book's publication was underwritten by Phineas T. Barnum, Rev. Ballou's close friend as well as a member of his church, as was the book's publisher J. S. (Justus Starr) Redfield. Indeed, Rev. Ballou, P. T. Barnum and J. S. Redfield were more than friends and business partners. The three men were, perhaps unknowingly, related. Ballou and Redfield share a common ancestor through Captain John Starr, while Barnum and Redfield have a common ancestor through Sir Thomas Barnum (the Earl Of Kent). The common bond of all three men was their Huguenot ancestry. The book measures 5.50" x 7.50" and consists of 412 text pages followed by seven pages of advertisements.

Book Condition

This THE DIVINE CHARACTER VINDICATED is in Good+/Very Good condition, especially for a book of this age. There are two small black markouts at top of inside front cover and a short penciled code as seen in photo. At top of the first blank page is a small penciled area including a price notation. The Seller states the book is not ex-lib and has not been rebound. The binding is tight and the spine has not been broken over. The four hardcover corners only are slightly bent, and there are minor scuffs and chipping in five or six small spots along the top and front cover edges and one small scuff on front cover, none of which are deep or affect the spine or interior pages. Although there are occasional dark foxing spots on some interior pages, these are quite small as seen in photos, and do not affect the text. The page edges only show faint age-toning. The interior pages are not yellowed but rather a dulled white. There are no rips, tears, dampstains or marks to the interior other than those noted above.

Provenance

The Seller acquired this book from an online charity auction, with an interest in his distant kinship to the Ballou family. The Seller's ancestor, a Calvinist pastor, settled Rhode Island with other Huguenots (comprised of different sects of Baptists, Puritans, Pilgrims, Calvinists, and Universalists).
