BOOK DESCRIPTION

OLD PLANTATION DAYS by Archibald Rutledge. Illustrated. Cumberland MD: The Eddy Press. Although undated, this book is known by the inscription date to have been published prior to December, 1913. Privately printed as a gift to friends and associates, this is the earliest edition of this title and is now quite rare. Only 100 to 250 (maximum) copies of this gift volume were printed. The book is signed by Mr. Rutledge on the first blank page preceding the title page. This book was presented to the Seller's grandfather, Victor M. Birely, while he was a student of Mr. Rutledge at Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania. The author taught English there for 37 years. Victor inscribed his name, address, date of receiving the book, and numbered it "24" on the inside front cover. The inscription reads: "V. M. Birely, Mercersburg Academy, Mercersburg, Pa., Dec. 13, 1913."  In hardback with no dust jacket as issued, this volume of 18 classic Nature and Americana short stories (5 stories of which are not seen in later trade editions), the book measures 5.75" x 8.25" and contains 160 pages.

CONDITION

OLD PLANTATION DAYS is in Very Good/Fine condition, with no torn or loose pages. A former internal separation between the front cover and first end page has been professionally repaired as may be seen in above photos. Other than the author's autograph and the original owner's 1913 inscription, there is neither writing nor marks, discoloration, watermarks or foxing speckles on any of the pages. There is minor surface-only rubbing to the front edge of spine. The page edges are only minimally age-toned and worn, while the text pages remain bright. The text and all illustrations are clearly visible throughout.

PROVENANCE

This OLD PLANTATION DAYS first printing was an inheritance from
the estate of Victor M. Birely, the Seller's grandfather, who had been
a student of the author at Mercersburg Academy in 1913.
